When you do a Google Image Search on "Diablos Rojos Mexico", the logo is the second image it finds.

To the right is the third.

I am not mentioning this because I look for cheap excuses to put questionable content on my website (although since it's there, let me say to all my male readers, "You're Welcome"). I mention it largely because it gives me something to say. Because let's face it: There's not much to say about the logo. This logo is generic to the point of hopelessness.

Let's do a quick breakdown. The logo has the following features:

  • A baseball
  • in a circle
  • which has the team name in it
  • with the team name written in "baseball script" across the baseball
  • with something (flames, in this case) added to the logo as a sort of icon for the nickname.
Here's the problem with it: The last little bit is the only thing that relates to the name. And even there, it's kind of a tenuous relationship. It's not like they put demon's horns on the logo, just flames. Sure, that kind of represents the place that devils come from, but it doesn't represent devils themselves. Besides, flames could represent so many places other than hell: the local Burger King, for example.

At its core, however, what you've got here is a baseball in a circle as your logo. They've fancied it up a bit, but that's the crux of it right there: A baseball in a circle. I have a (somewhat out-of-date) collection of all the logos being used in minor league baseball, and there are a dozen or more such logos, depending on how you count borderline cases (the Stockton Ports of the California League, for example, have a curved banner over the top of the baseball but nothing on the bottom). That's over 5% of all minor league logos which are, in essence, using the exact same logo.

Henceforth (in this and all future reviews), I will refer to such logos as "BIC" (Baseball In Circle) logos. Mexico City's logo is not the epitome of a BIC logo (that honor belongs to the Burlington Royals of the Appalachian League, but it'll be a long time before I get to them), but it is the first I've gotten to. I'd say this is something they should be proud of, but we all know it isn't. It's something to be ashamed of.

Now, if you're one of my male readers, odds are you're saying to yourself, "Yeah, yeah, whatever...what's up with the girl?" Well, what's up with the girl is that Mexican league teams have cheerleaders. I'm not entirely certain why Mexican baseball has cheerleaders but American baseball doesn't, but there you have it. My guess is that American baseball teams are trying to market themselves as good, clean fun for the whole family, and don't see scantily-clad women as being conducive to that atmosphere. Or maybe they figure that Dad's a lot more likely to get beaned by a foul ball if he's too busy ogling Tiffany and her pom-poms to notice that the game has begun. Either way, these don't seem to be concerns for the teams in Mexico. What this says regarding the differences between American culture and Mexican culture, I won't even begin to speculate. But I'm sure some insight could be gained by watching Univision on a Saturday night.

I could go on about this issue, but I'm having enough trouble resisting the urge to make a "Flick my Bic" joke as it is. So I'm just going to let it go at that.

Final Score: 51 points.
Penalties: Script, 7 pts; Equipment, 13 pts; Colorful, 31 pts.
Bonuses: None.
