The town of Kingsport is missing out on a prime opportunity.

To the right is a map of part of Kingsport. Do you see that island in the river? That long island? That long island's name is (you've probably already guessed this) Long Island. "Long Island" isn't a particularly rare name; the differentiation page for Long Island on Wikipedia lists fifteen thusly-named islands just in the United States, and nearly fifty worldwide. The most famous one, of course, is the one in New York which is almost as large as Delaware and is home to the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. That, of course, means that Citi Field, where the New York Mets play, is on Long Island. So wouldn't it be a neat parallel if the Kingsport Mets played on their own Long Island as well?

But they don't. And it's not because there's no space for them. There is in fact a fairly large park on Long Island, and said park has eight baseball/softball fields, three of them professional-size. It would be the easiest thing in the world to make some minor modifications to the park and let the K-Mets play there. You wouldn't actually need to add all that much infrastructure: the parking lot for the park is already pretty close in size to the size of the parking lot at Hunter Wright Stadium (the actual home of the K-Mets). You're have to get rid of a couple of the smaller fields to build the stands, but there's plenty of space to replace them.

Yeah, I know it's hardly a big deal, but still: you've got the opportunity. Do something with it.

As for the name and logo, there's only so much I can say. It is rather absurd for a team in a city of 48,000 people to have a name which is short for "Metropolitan", even if Kingsport is technically part of a metropolitan statistical area. But there's no realistic hope the team would have any other name. First, it plays in the Appalachian League, and every team in the Appalachian League uses its parent team's name. (Oddly, this isn't the case in the Pioneer League; the other league at the same level as the Appy League; only two of the Pioneer League's eight teams do this.) Second, the Kingsport Mets are owned by the New York Mets. In all of minor league baseball, twenty-five teams are owned by their parent team, and only four have names that aren't either identical to or variants of the parent team's name. I'd love to see someone break the trend of using the parent team's name in the Appalachian League, but I don't expect this to be the team to do it. They did at least come up with a slightly different logo, which is a good thing because putting the New York City skyline in the Kingsport Mets' logo would be laughable. They didn't replace the NYC skyline with the Kingsport skyline — largely because Kingport doesn't have a skyline — but instead went with a baseball diamond with something inside it. I'm not entirely certain what, but I presume from the colors that it's either the river and land adjacent to the river or a hill and sky. (Either way, I'm interpreting it as scenery and penalizing them accordingly.) Boring, but I suppose it will do, and it's not like there's a better alternative.

Final Score: 186 points.
Penalties: Script, 7 pts; Scenery, 11 pts; Offspring, 12 pts; Equipment, 13 pts; Diamond, 16 pts; Letter, 24 pts.
