No challenge to the copyrights of these logos is intended by their inclusion here. Posted 2004 January 31 Man, I have really dreaded writing this one. Simply put, there is absolutely nothing bad to say about this logo or name. The name comes from the fact that the movie Slap Shot was filmed in Johnstown. The logo is a perfect way of having a bold, elegant visual background that doesn't resort to cheap hockey references or disparaging stereotypes of Native Americans. I suppose the name itself could be called a disparaging stereotype, but since "chief" isn't an exclusively Native American term, even that sounds weak. In any case, it certainly isn't in the same league as the name "Washington Redskins." So now what am I supposed to say? I could go into an essay about my opinion of naming teams after Native Americans, but that would require being serious. I could write about Slap Shot, but is there really much to say that hasn't already been said? The hell with it. It's a great logo. 'Nuff said.
