Reading Royals

This page has been bugging me for a while, and since I don't have any current teams to review, I'll just take the opportunity to fix it.

See, when I first wrote this review, I commented that I wouldn't have anything to write about had I not discovered that there is a women's football (i.e., soccer) team in Reading England which is also called the Reading Royals. There was just one little problem, which is that the only reason there was a women's team with that name is that they were affiliated with the men's football team called the Reading Royals. Furthermore, the women's team is now Reading FC Women. So even if the joke I made about fans of Johnstown, Trenton, etc. making posters comparing the hockey players in Reading to women playing soccer made sense once upon a time, it definitely doesn't today. Oh well — live and learn, right?

But as previously noted, the earlier version of the review said I wouldn't have anything to write about had I not discovered there is a women's team with that name. And now I've discovered there isn't. This puts me back in the situation of having nothing to say about this team and logo. The logos I have a lot to say about are the bad ones. But this one is pretty good. Sure, if I wanted I could harp on the absurdity of a purple lion the way I harped on the absurdity of the all-green mallard that was once used by the Quad City Mallards, but the Royals clearly don't intend this to be an accurate representation. The crown on the lion's head is another potential target, but it ties the "king of the jungle" theme to the name quite nicely. And given that whole "king of the jungle" bit and the fact that a lion appears in the British royal coat of arms, I can't even fairly accuse them of using an irrelevant feature in their logo. Okay, I admit that the issue of fairness doesn't always stop me, but this time I just don't want to. All in all, I'm more than willing to give them a pass. This is the sort of logo I want other teams to start making, so I'm not going to rag on them just to have something to say. I'll just say that it's a very good logo and leave it at that.
