Posted 2005 February 27 I've been wondering something about this logo for years now. What is that thing in his mouth? I think it's supposed to be a puck. But I've never been certain. A puck is a very odd thing to have sticking out the side of your mouth like that. I'm not convinced that a typical person could actually hold a puck out the side of his mouth like that. Mind you, the typical person also couldn't contort his mouth into a triangular shape, so clearly we're dealing with a very, ahem, "special" person. Assuming it is a puck -- and you'd better believe I'm giving the points for it -- than this logo may have the most subtle inclusions of hockey equipment I've ever seen. First, there's the puck that doesn't look like a puck and certainly isn't being used as one. Second, he's wearing a hockey glove. Note that I said "a hockey glove" and not "hockey gloves". I can't be certain he has a second hockey glove, because his right hand is hidden. One would think that the other hand would be gripping the helm (have you ever heard of anyone trying to control one of those things one-handed?), but the position of his arm makes it clear he isn't. So what is he doing with it? I've decided I'd rather not think too much about that.
All that being said, I have to give them points for the skyline inside the helm. That's pretty cool. The helm with the skyline inside used to be their entire logo. That was a bit plain, and I can see why they wanted to add something, but I don't think they did a good job at picking what to add. I'm not able to come up with anything better, however. Actually, it's not that adding a person controlling the wheel was a bad idea; the execution was poor, that's all. Something a bit less cartoony would have been so much better. Of course, isn't that true for two thirds of the logos out there?
Final Score: 24 points.
