You're probably thinking, "Oh, that's just silly. The name
Rockers is obviously some kind of rock-and-roll reference, but
for the logo they went with a piece of furniture."
If so, you're wrong. The team is named after furniture.
Not that it's any less silly, of course. Quite the opposite if anything.
High Point, you see, is home to a sizeable furniture industry.
Furniture-making has been a major industry in that part of North
Carolina since before High Point even existed. For the past century,
High Point has been home to a furniture trade show (the name has changed
over the years; currently it is simply called the "High Point Market")
which has for most of that century been the largest in the world. High
Point is proud of its furniture industry, to the point that in the 1920s
the chamber of commerce built the "World's Largest Chest of Drawers" as
a roadside attraction. It's thirty-six feet tall, features three
drawers, and has a couple of gigantic socks hanging over the second
drawer (textiles are also a big industry in that part of the state, or
at least they used to be). Oh, and if I had written this review a year
ago I could have told you that the chest of drawers was on sale (the
auction was 2018 July). Apparently there's an office building inside.
Insert obvious "bureau" joke here.
So even though for once I'm disappointed that a team passed on the
oppportunity to put "Sox" in their name (like I said, textiles are also
a big industry there), I can't deny they've picked a decent name for a
team in that area. A good name, actually, given the other meaning of
rocker. And given the name, I can only complain so much about
the fact that the logo features exactly what the team is named after.
But I still have a few questions about it. Why, precisely, is the
rocker flying? Given the wood construction, isn't the fire shooting out
of the back a terrible idea? Why does the logo have a vague 1950s vibe
to it?
But hey, whatever. It's nice to see a team that brings a little bit of
whimsy without going completely overboard (I'm looking at you, Amarillo
Sod Poodles...you and half a dozen other teams with utterly ridiculous
names). It's named after furniture. The logo features an old-fashioned
piece of furniture turned into a space ship. The second H in
High Point turns into an upward arrow to emphasize "high" in a
non-drug-referential sort of way. It's just the right level of silly.
So you'll hear no complaints from me.
